Kerry H., a sharp eyed reader in Charlotte, North Carolina, spied something unusual on a recent visit to Babies R Us: a Pali crib.
Why is that unusual? For years, Pali has resisted selling to chain stores, least of all Babies R Us. (Ok, Pali is sold in Buy Buy Baby, which is a chain, but apparently that doesn't count for reasons only Pali understands). In the crib business since 1962, Pali has always been sold in specialty stores . . . until now.
In fact, Pali's web site still states:
Pali products are only available through independent specialty furniture retailers.
Yet, our reader just spied a new Pali on the floor of her Babies R Us:
I returned to the store and asked Babies R Us and they confirmed it is
indeed a Pali crib. Said it's a new product for them (and for Pali
working with them). It's been offered in the stores for about a month
and is not available online. It's a lifetime style (no drop side) they call Karla and they're
selling it for $429.
Since the crib isn't online, we don't have any pictures yet. (If you see it in a BRU, feel free to snap a cell phone picture and email it to us!). Given the price, we would guess this is one of Pali's new Asian-made cribs.
Have you seen Pali's Karla crib at Babies R Us? If so, post your thoughts!
I called Pali, and ordered the crib from BRU. Yes, the crib is Pali and made in Thailand. (per Pali customer service). The crib is made with pine wood as opposed to the birch that I more typically see. It only takes 7-10 days to come in. We went to pick up the crib yesterday, but it was damaged, so we sent it back and are awaiting the new one.

I ordered the crib and matching dresser/changing table combo from BRU. It came in about a week later. When my husband picked it up from the store & brought it home, it turned out to be the wrong crib. They sent us the Carter’s crib instead. We got the correct dresser. I wonder if they made that mistake because our surname is Carter. Well, they promised to fix the error by delivering the right crib. We are still waiting for about a week now. It is an attractive piece of furniture though. We purchased the set because it was one of the few with a small enough dresser to fit in our tiny NYC nursery.

My wife and I just got back from BRU, and we were close to ordering the Pali crib and dresser. The big drawback we saw was that where the drawers on the dresser close, there is a gap of about a quarter inch of open space between where the drawer ends and the side of the dresser begins. You can actually see the tracks of the drawers through it. That was a big turnoff for us.

I ordered the crib through BRU back in October. At the time, BRU adverstised the crib as a lifetime crib so I bought the crib with the intent of converting it into a full size bed in the future. However, when I tried to buy the bed rails in February, BRU said they no longer classified the Karla model as a “lifetime” crib and that I could no longer order the bed rails through them (even though the bed rails were still on my registry). I was really annoyed with this news. It totally defeats my whole purpose of buying this crib.

I saw the Karla at BRU this weekend and the crib price has been dropped to $379. The 6-drawer dresser is $449. I was hoping to find some more reviews on it, as the price and smaller size are exactly what we’re looking for. It’s still listed as a “lifetime” crib, though, and gives the parts numbers for the rails to special order.

I ordered this crib back in September 2008 and it arrived shortly thereafter. We then ordered the full size conversion rails separately on November 4. It is now June 23, and I still have not received the rails. According to BRU, the problem is with Pali – apparently they weren’t manufacturing the rails until January, then February, then May. I have contacted Pali directly but have not yet received a response. Needless to say, I am very disappointed. It is a beautiful crib, but it will be useless to me as a full size bed unless I receive the conversion rails. At this point, I am not confident that that will occur.
