A new crib brand has landed in chain stores in recent weeks: Butterfly Living is selling cribs under its own name in Target and under a license from Carter’s and Amy Coe in Babies R Us.
Example: this crib at Target for $329 (pictured) in a natural finish is very similar to a “Cottage” crib in white at Babies R us for $300.
So who is Butterfly Living? An industry source tells us the brand was started by an ex-Delta employee. Imported from China, the company’s dressers are RTA (ready to assemble). Or “painfully RTA,” as our source put it!
Since the brand is so new, we haven’t heard any reviews from readers yet. So if you’ve bought a Butterfly Living or Cater’s crib or dresser, post your thoughts here!
Update: Butterfly Living was acquired by Summer Infant in July 2009. You can you find their furniture on Summer’s web site here.
I was affected by the lovely Jardine recall, and the Carter’s Casual White convertible crib was the only crib BRU had in stock that would somewhat coordinate with our nursery. The crib is antique white, not stark white, which is confusing based on it’s name. (It was the only antique white crib in the store, which is the main reason that we got it).
I am happy with the style of the crib and it seems sturdy overall. My main concern with it after the Jardine recall is that the slats seem very “flexible”. I would never have even thought about the slats prior to the recall. My husband suggested that these slats are flexible to have give in them, so that they won’t break like the recalled Jardine cribs. My son appears safe in the crib, but I am slightly concerned about the slats. I don’t imagine he would try to bend them like I did, but it does give me pause.
The only other potential drawback is that it has an MDF platform for the mattress, not a spring support like our recalled crib did.
It seems like a decent crib for $300, it comes with a toddler rail to convert it to a toddler bed and there are rails available to convert it to a full sized headboard (of course at a $120 added cost), but I am still SO BITTER about the whole BRU/Jardine recall that I never would have purchased this crib if I had any other choice. I’m done with BRU once I get my voucher and refund. I don’t know if I’m willing to give BRU any more money and buy the conversion rails. Only time will tell if they do anything to win back some customer loyalty.
-Frustrated in PA (but warming up slightly to our new crib)

Hmmm, it seems like the person above me thought they were commenting on the article that was below this one. Oh well…my friend just bought a Butterfly Living crib; I was over at her house yesterday and we were pretty impressed with it. Sure, assembling something, especially a crib, is never fun, but the end result looked sturdy and comfortable.
I’ll definitely tell her about this article and see if she can post anything about her own personal experience using the crib for her baby boy. All I can say is that the frame looked very strong, and if I didn’t have a fine crib (Arms) for my daughter I’d probably buy this one!

I was commenting on the Butterfly Living/Carter’s crib in my post above – I bought it as part of the recall, but I was commenting on the quality of the Carter’s crib. I’m sorry if my frustration with BRU distracted from my review of the crib, but I was commenting on the Carter’s crib.

This review is about the Carters Casual White Crib… (Just a background on why we bought it… We were also affected by the Jardine recall, and we HAVE NOT gotten our voucher after a month already! Our 8 month old needed a crib back so we broke down and got this one today.) This looked like the best option at BRU – IN STOCK, it seemed sturdy in the store, the corners are cool and there is no visible hardware. We just brought it home so I will post again once it is together.

Ok… it took about 30 min for hubby to get it all together. It is very sturdy and it looks awesome, the room we have it in has white wainscot on the walls so it actually fits in there pretty well! I am not crazy about the board the mattress sits on, it is very visible, definitely needs a dust ruffle under there! But other than the board so far so good.

We ordered the Carter’s classic sleigh crib and changing table from Babies R Us and we love it! It was so easy to put together, no flaws in the wood and it arrived in 2 weeks as promised. It is very sturdy and I can’t wait to use it! I love the fact that it has no visible hardware which I found a lot of cribs in the same price range had. Also, I am short and find that this crib will be easy for me to get the baby in and out of.

My husband just put together the Carter’s Casual Crib (White) on Saturday and I love it. It was not a big deal to put together at all and doesn’t take long at all to assemble, especially if you normally buy items from IKEA, which can require extended periods of time assembling.. If my husband hadn’t been watching a ball game at the same time, he would have had it done in no time (20 minutes). It seems sturdy and the slats are rigid to me. It is on a platform, but it is securely nestled in there. So far absolutely no concerns. I’m so happy it’s here.
As a note, mine came with all the pieces to convert it to a toddler bed and later to a full-size bed. The box was ginormous and luckily the representative at BRU warned us of the size when I ordered it. When it came in, we rented a truck to get it home. This was the crib I wanted because my mother looked at all the cribs at BRU and thought this one was the best.

We bought the Carter’s Classic Sleigh Crib and Dresser (chocolate color) from BRU and we just LOVE it. It looks very high end, is very sturdy, no visible screws, etc. The pieces arrived in 2 weeks from ordering, and my husband put them together with ease. It looks SO great in my daughters nursery. We inspected the boxes at the store before buying and everything was in order.
the down side (that I’ve read) is that it doesn’t have a drop down side to make it easier to pick up the baby (i guess.)

Just FYI – Butterfly Living is also selling cribs at Wal-mart under the “Child of Mine by Carters” label. I just purchased a standard crib in white today, and will be sure to visit back and let you know my thoughts once it arrives and I’ve had the opportunity to assemble. I did speak with a representative at Butterfly Living who confirmed that the crib met all current safety standards. Their toll free number is 888.443.9876. I hope this is helpful!

I just bought an Amy Coe crib (Westport) and that is made by Butterfly Living. I will write a post once I get it.
