An alert reader noted that the Britax has now remedied the tether problem with the Britax Boulevard convertible car seat. In our book, we noted a safety recall last year for the Boulevard and Britax’s advice to stop using the tether strap when your child exceeds 50 pounds. Britax now tells us that advice only applies to Boulevard seats made from May to August 2006; for seats made BEFORE or AFTER those dates, you CAN use the tether strap above 50 pounds (if your vehicle allows such usage).
Again, check your vehicle manual to find any limits to tether use (some vehicle makers limit tether use to LESS than 50 pounds).
In other Britax news, the company plans to launch a new seat in August: the Diplomat ($260, pictured at right) will be similar to the Boulevard (featuring side-impact protection, quick adjust harness, body pillows) . . . but the Diplomat will have a 40 pounds limit.
The Diplomat seems to be aimed at parents who like the side impact protection of Britax’s most expensive seats . . . but don’t have the room to install a Boulevard (which can be rather bulky).
it should be noted that safekids stated in safe ride news a few years back that despite vehicle tether limits, it was better to tether than not (though the boulevards affected by the Boulevard should still stop at 50lbs)
This mostly applies to the Regent, which goes to 80lbs and, until recently, the top tether was required for all installs over 50lbs.
It was the opinion that even if the tether anchor were to break, the protection provided would be better than none at all.
