Let’s talk the best butterfly pea flower tea.

Also known as blue tea, butterfly pea flower tea is made from the blue flowers of the Clitoria ternatea plant. Grown in South East Asia, that plant is more commonly known as Asian pigeonwings, butterfly-pea or blue-pea. We’ll go with butterfly pea flower tea since it is the name most recognized in North America. 

Made popular by food bloggers and social media, it is a caffeine-free herbal tea that is popular in drinks and cocktails. 

You can order it in both loose leaf and tea bag varieties. We tried both. The best tasting brand we found was Majestic Herb’s Butterfly Pea Flowers. Here’s why: 

What We Liked

• Mild taste (like chamomile) but bold color. Of all the tea we sampled, this was the most blue—which we realize is part of the appeal!

• Imported from Thailand.

• Pesticide free.

• Fair trade.

What Needs Work

• No instructions on package. You have to guess how many blossoms to use—and how long to steep the tea.

• Strong aroma with grassy or hay-like notes. Let’s be honest: all the tea we brewed had this strong aroma . . .  some folks like it. Others don’t.

What We Liked

• Quick steeping time. This brand steeps in just 1-2 minutes—that’s much quicker than other blue tea brands we tried. We’re not sure why, but the results were great.

• No preservatives.

• USDA organic.

• Can reuse blossoms a couple of times for more tea.

What Needs Work

• Pricey.

• Allergy alert: do not use if allergic to pollen, says the maker.
