What's the best RV mattress? To find out, we surveyed the RV owners among our parent readers for their favorites. Then we spoke with RV experts about what works best for an RV. We learned that folks really dislike the mattresses that come with their RV's—and seek to replace them with something more comfortable.

FYI: We've been reviewing and rating products for the home and families since 1994. To keep things independent, we don't take money or freebies from brands we review! Our work is 100% reader-supported!

Best Splurge RV Mattress: DynastyMattress 10-Inch CoolBreeze Gel Memory Foam Mattress for RV

A short queen mattress is made to fit most RV’s, campers or trailers. It is the same width as a standard queen (60″) but only 74″ or 75″ long. A regular queen mattress is 80″ long.

That extra five or six inches may not seem like much, but it matters when it comes to RV’s—they are rated on the amount of weight they can pull. And RV makers try to eliminate weight from any part of the RV they can as a result.

Space is also a consideration—those extra six inches require that much more cabin space. Cut that space in the bedroom and you can add it to the living room, for example.

When we asked the RV owners among our parent readers for their favorite RV mattress, one brand came up time and time again: DynastyMattress. Their 10″ CoolBreeze Gel Memory Foam mattress is a reader favorite and we’d agree: this one is an excellent choice, based on our additional research.

Here’s more:

What We Liked

• Doesn’t overheat like other memory foam mattresses. DynastyMattress uses a cool gel in their mattress and it works well at keeping you, well, cool.

• Very comfortable.

• Easy zip-off cover is machine washable.

• Medium firmness.

What Needs Work

• Pricey.

• Too firm for some folks, too soft for others. Well, it’s hard to make everyone happy—it may depend on the type of mattress you typically sleep on as to whether this one is too soft or firm. If you don’t sleep on a memory foam mattress, this may take some time to get used to.

Best Budget-Friendly

Comfy yet only 8" thick
Loved this hybrid steel spring and foam mattress for its comfort and sturdy design. Also nice: CertiPUR foam is more eco-friendly than others we researched. Caveat: a bit heavy.

Best Budget Friendly: Zinus 8 Inch Foam And Spring RV Mattress

No, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good quality RV mattress. Case in point: Zinus’s 8″ Foam and Spring RV Mattress.

As the name implies, this mattress has a steel innerspring that is covered in foam, yet is only 8″ thick. That’s great for smaller RV’s or where you don’t have has much headroom (think campers).

What We Liked

• Sturdy.

• Comfortable.

• Quickly expands in about 72 hours.

• Affordable.

• Certipur Foam is more eco-friendly than others we researched.

What Needs Work

• Heavy. At 61 lbs., this mattress weighs about 10% more than our top splurge pick (the DynastyMattress CoolBreeze). And that mattress is 10″ thick, versus the 8″ for the Zinus.

• Too thin for some folks. We see a few user reports that folks could feel the springs through the mattress—we didn’t see that when we tried one out for this article. But we didn’t try it out for a longer time, when this issue may be more relevant.

Best Short Queen RV Mattress RV Mattress: LUCID 10 Inch 2020 Gel Memory Foam Mattress

Weight matters when it comes to RV mattresses—and if you are looking for a quality short queen mattress with the least amount of weight, we’d recommend this one: LUCID’s 10″ gel memory foam mattress.

Quality is good, say our readers who recommended this brand . . . and the weight is only 43.3 pounds.

Other RV mattresses we researched weighed in at 50 and even 60 pounds. That may not seem like much of a difference, but given the cost of fuel, the lighter the better!

What We Liked

• Cool and comfortable.

• Medium firmness.

• CertiPUR is more eco-friendly than other foam mattresses we researched, in our opinion.

• Gel-infused memory foam top for more comfort.

What Needs Work

• Can develop impressions over time. Unfortunately, that is true for many memory foam mattresses.

• Waterproof cover is extra accessory. We also see scattered complaints about mold even with the waterproof mattress cover. This is a touchy subject we heard about from RV owners—most acknowledge that if you spill a liquid on a mattress, you should clean it immediately because even waterproof covers only can do so much water proofing!

Best RV Bunk Mattress: Zinus Memory Foam 5” Cot Size

Cot mattresses sold with most RV’s are not very comfortable. If you want to upgrade your cot mattress, we recommend Zinus’s Memory Foam 5″ cot-size mattress. We liked the overall quality here—and the price is right.

What We Liked

• Durable.

• Quite comfortable.

• Affordable.

• Just the right firmness. At 5″ thick, it isn’t the most thick option out there—but it does the job.

What Needs Work

• Doesn’t fully expand? We see scattered reports that this mattress didn’t expand to be 5″ thick—instead, it came up to 4″ or so.
