Weight: 30 to 110 lbs.
Price: $40
IIHS rating: Best Bet in both modes.
NHTSA ease of use rating: Four out of five stars.
Pros: Works to 110 lbs. Under $50.
Cons: Previous version had issues with shoulder belt holder, now corrected. Requires assembly.
Comments: The Harmony Dreamtime is a belt-positioning booster that features side impact protection, adjustable headrest, and converts to a backless booster. Yes, all that for $40 at big box stores like Target and Walmart.
For our last printing, we have this seat a D and noted the NHTSA was concerned that the shoulder belt can slip out of the Dreamtime’s belt guide. Harmony corrected this fault and the NHTSA now scores the seat four out of five stars.
Parent feedback on this seat is mostly positive. They really like the light weight and, of course, the low price. A few negatives to the Dreamtime: it requires assembly and there are no instructions on how to convert it from high back to backless mode. One eagle-eyed parent noted the cup holders are under the arm rests making access rather awkward.
We will recommend this seat—but be sure to get a model made after 2014. That’s when Harmony updated the belt guide.
