Sam Gorenstein, owner of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, wrote in last week with some corrections/updates to our review of the crib brand in the latest edition of BABY BARGAINS. Here are his comments:
“Cribs are made in Bulgaria”
Two styles of our cribs are made in Bulgaria and the others are made domestically in our own factory. Our cribs that are made in Bulgaria are delivered to us unfinished. Therefore, we finish all the cribs in our factory in Canada that allows us to be in control of the finishing and guarantees the cribs and furniture will always match.
“Delivery Time 14-16 Weeks”
Delivery time for all products to the stores is generally 8 weeks. There are times when smaller retailers are on credit hold or they do not have enough pieces on order to meet the minimum shipping requirements. Therefore, delivery may be stretched out longer than 8 weeks. Generally, it is on a case by case situation .
“Use of MDF in the Product”
All my painted finishes are produced on MDF. All of my stains are produced using maple and maple veneers. There is no more MDF in the product today than five years ago.
“Indie’s dropping the line”
I had a couple of independents in NYC, especially one where we experienced an unfavorable working relationship (credit) and decided not to continue to allow them to distribute our product. Also, the same retailer experienced high volume of damages to due to poor handling of the product.
"Competitiveness with the imports"
MHC will remain competitive by updating our machinery and controlling our cost. At present, we can be competitive in the current environment.
In response to MHC’s correction to “Delivery Time”… I placed an order for 3 pieces of furniture on February 25, 2008 through a large retailer in the Northeast. The retailer quoted 10-14 weeks delivery. However, shortly after placing the order I saw this correction posted in which MHC claims “generally 8 weeks” to deliver to the retailer. It has now been 10 weeks since I placed the order and it has not yet shipped to the retailer. The retailer has called MHC for an update and we were told that it should arrive to the retailer’s warehouse in a week and a half. Should this hold true it will have taken 11 weeks for the furniture to arrive to the retailer. My retailer was correct in their estimate and Baby Bargains was not that far off considering that once it arrives to the retailer it could be another 1-2 weeks before it arrives to the consumer. After my experience, 8 weeks seems unrealistic with this manufacturer.

I purchases one of these recalled cribs at a place called Bedroom World in Bricktown, NJ. This place like many other furniture stores has switched ownerships and will do nothing for us. When I contacted Mother Hubbard directly a gentleman named Brett got on the phone and told me I have to switch the support bars upside down. Which shows just how bogus this idea of the directions being wrong really is. Basically in his language he indicated that what I am doing was not how the crib was originally engineered and intended to be used. When
I asked for a manager he paused for a second and then said, “Hello this is Brett I am the manager!” This company is an outrage. They claimed that everything was made in Canada, now we find out that the cribs are made in Bulgaria and they only paint the cribs in Canada. This company is awful. I intend to write a long letter to Baby Bargains and explain just how un helpful this company was on a recalled product. The “fix” that they have put out on their website is ridiculously impossible to understand or follow. This company is a total loser, I am so upset that I gave over 1500 to them to furnish my daughters room. I would never recommend this product or company to anyone ever. I have never seen a company who manufactured a faulty product act with such utter disregard for those who purchased their merchandise. Never ever ever, purchase anything from this company, they are awful, terrible, uncooperative, and plain old evil! They deserve to have their lies, and manipulations catch up with them and go out of business.

I bought the “Once Upon A Time” set for my son and I love it. My son is 4 now and the furniture is in excellent condition. I remember putting the crib together, which I did by myself, and it was simple. Also, I used to work for a major baby retailer in VA and put convertible and drop-side cribs together in the store and never took more than 40 minutes. I would rate MHC’s customer service to be excellent. Anytime a customer had a special request, or issue concerning their furniture we could easily contact an speak personally with Sam Gorenstein with an answer or solution. Delivery time, however, I experienced to be more in the 10-12 week range. But, delivery time is based on lots of factors. If you are ordering a piece that the store generally carries(in the finish/color they carry),and the piece is already on order and not already purchased by another couple, then you may get your furniture in as soon as 2 weeks. But if you choose a piece or finish that is not carried by the retailer you will have a longer wait time. I suggest going to a retailer that carries a good selection of MHC if you are worried about delivery time, and not to bash mom and pop shops, but I would buy from a larger retailer that you dont have to worry about them going out of business a year down the line. The last thing I would like to mention about this great family owned company is that they don’t change their lines up every other year like many other companies do. They sell classic yet classic kids furniture that your child can truly grow with because 5-6 years later if you want to add a piece or to, you can…and it will match.

I completely agree with Chris San Filippo, my experience with the company was disgraceful. I wouldn’t ever recommend Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to anyone. There are other manufacturers and retailers who care about customer service. The only way your business is going to survive these days is with good customer service and MHC completely lacks it.
Griselda, your average consumer has not worked at a major baby retailer so does not have experience with conversion kits, so will not find it simple.
