Update August 2011: It appears Baby Gap has dropped this furniture line, although Dorel’s web site is still live. Dorel links to their own e-commerce site for sales, but none of the cribs or dressers were available upon a recent visit. Here is an archive of our past review:

Baby Gap’s nursery furniture is made by Dorel, the Canadian conglomerate reviewed later in this section. The two crib offerings are pricey: $700 for a 3-in-1 sleigh crib (pictured) and $550 for a “beadboard crib.” Matching three drawer dressers are $550 as well. We have mixed feelings about this furniture. While shipping is included, paying $700 for a Dorel crib is like paying $70,000 for a Toyota Camry. . . you can, but why? Another disappointment: the cribs are made of poplar, MDF and veneers. At this price, we’d expect to see all solid wood. And Dorel’s safety track record has been mixed, to say the least: 320,000 Jardine/Dorel cribs were recalled in 2008 for defective spindles. Bottom line: if you like the look, save yourself big bucks and buy the Jardine BRU version. Or better yet, skip it and buy a brand that has a better reputation. Rating: F
