As of November 2013, it appears this company is out of business. Their web site has been down for months and we’ve been unable to contact them. However, we still see some of their furniture being sold online, so here is an archived review.

Also known as BSF Baby, Bright Steps is a new, e-commerce nursery furniture company whose wares are sold on BabiesRUs.com, Target, Amazon and other sites. The emphasis here is on low price cribs ($200 to $300) and ready-to-assemble dressers ($200 to $250). Despite being in the market for two year, Bright Steps is a bit of a mystery—the company lacks a functioning web site (it is still under construction) or contact info, making hands-on inspection of their cribs difficult.
Our industry sources tell us Bright Steps is made in the same Chinese factory that turned out Simplicity’s cribs. Simplicity was the infamous nursery furniture company (now out of business) whose cribs were so defect-ridden that they prompted several safety recalls. Of course, just because Bright Steps might use same factory doesn’t mean its furniture is dangerous. But it does give us pause—and we can’t confirm their factory source one way, or the other.
Reader feedback on this brand is overwhelmingly negative. On our message boads, one mom wrote: “Unfortunately I ended up buying one of their cribs and agree with the low rating. The manufacturing was poor. One bolt hole was not drilled at all, making it un-useable. Another piece was damaged—more than likely just poorly made. Their customer service is non-existent. The 800# goes to an answering service.” Similar complaints are posted online on sites that sell BSF Baby: problems with freight damaged items, poor quality, no customer service.
Bottom line: BSF Baby (Bright Steps) is not a brand we can recommend.
FYI: Despite the similar sounding name, Bright Steps is not related to Bright Starts, a baby gear company. Rating: F
