Yesterday, we blogged on the June 28th deadline for the baby gear biz to meet the new federal safety rules on cribs. We described the situation as chaos and confusion, as crib makers rush to meet the new rules and insure their retailer’s stock is compliant with a raft of new rules, regulations and testing standards.
As if on cue, to illustrate this point, we got this email this morning from a crib retailer. This is a communication from Million Dollar Baby or MDB (a large maker of cribs sold in both chain stores and independents) to crib sellers:
To all accounts,
Regarding: Annabelle Mini crib M5998
Emily Mini crib 4798
Kalani Mini crib 5598Last week MDB was informed by Intertek (testing lab) that their previous indication that our mini cribs were compliant with upcoming standards was incorrect. In fact, none of the Mini cribs are compliant with upcoming standards, and cannot be made compliant with a retro-fit kit.
MDB is working to get compliant stock, but will probably not receive any until June/2011 at the earliest.
This means that all mini cribs currently on store floors as well as in inventory are non-compliant. Additionally , all stock currently in the MDB warehouses is non-compliant as well.
Any questions, let us know.
Editor’s note: A quick update today (4/29/11). Million Dollar Baby touched base with us today to clarify that all their mini cribs in stores today do meet current standards. What we are referring to here is the FUTURE standard that will take effect June 28. MDB says: “MDB will be in full compliance come June 28th with both our cribs and mini cribs and many cribs already are in compliance today.”
