The CPSC approved a ban today on the sale of drop-side cribs in a 5-0 vote. The new standards would prohibit the sale of drop-side cribs in stores and their use in daycare centers and hotels. The rules would likely take effect later in 2010, says an AP article on the move.
The move comes amid a spate of recent recalls for drop-side cribs, including one today for Pottery Barn Kids cribs. The government says at least 32 deaths since 2000 have been attributed to drop-side cribs, whose rails can detach from the crib if the hardware fails or if the crib is mis-assembled. Since 2005, the CPSC has recalled over 9 million drop-side cribs.
Major retailers have already stopped selling drop-side cribs and most major crib makers stopped manufacturing them in the past year. However, millions of these cribs are still being sold in second-stores and on Craigslist.
No word yet if the CPSC plans to recall cribs from defunct crib companies (we discussed this issue earlier on our blog).
2 important announcements today on crib safety, thank you for sharing the news with parents and caregivers.
An article I read at CNN says that ALL cribs would be rendered outdated by new regulations. What could the new rules possibly be that all cribs are no good?
AND when can we buy the new cribs?
Re: [Baby Bargains Book Blog] Dave submitted a comment to Drop-side cribs to be banned by end of 2010
Hi Dave: I think you misread that—the government is only banning DROP-SIDE cribs, not all cribs!

I purchased a drop side crib from a friend in January. She had gotten this crib from a high end baby store. If I contact the baby store will I have any options if the crib has been recalled? I see they are saying they are banning or recalling all these cribs, does this mean we all have to go out and spend money to purchase a new one?

Just to clarify: the government has not recalled ALL drop-side cribs (although they have recalled quite a few). The government is banning the sale of NEW drop-side cribs. I would make sure your crib has not been recalled. If not, I would suggest contacting the store you purchased it from and asking if they have a trade-in program.
I sure hope that this ban doesn’t last. There is no other option for mom’s with back problems or have had recent surgery.
