We have often complained about how companies have run recalls (ahem, Jardine). But today reader Jennifer E writes in with complements for Munire for how they've handled thelead paint recall. Hopefully, other companies can learn from this example:
We received a phone call from USA Baby in MN letting us know that our Munire crib was possibly involved in a recall (excellent customer service, in our opinion). We checked the Munire website and discovered that our Newport Rubbed Black crib, dresser and conversion kit were indeed involved in the recall due to possible lead paint. I called Munire and confirmed this information. In two business days we received a coupon for replacement items. We disassembled the items and brought them back to the USA Baby store. Munire did say that we could contact our local store to have the items picked up (store would be reimbursed by Munire) but luckily my Dad has a truck with a trailer. Munire told us that we will receive the replacement set in 5 business days – just did this yesterday so I cannot confirm whether or not we received the replacement set in the confirmed time.
My one complaint – the only other set in black is the Essex which is priced significantly lower than the Newport collection. The coupon we received was to replace the set with any other of their collections for the same items (i.e., crib, combo dresser, conversion kit). We are expecting another baby in June so we avoided this by ordering the Majestic collection in classic chestnut for the new baby's room. I will say that they let us swap out the combo dresser for the 6 drawer dresser as we did not find the door with shelf on the combo to be particularly useful. We then purchased the Munire Essex collection in black and will have to wait the standard 10-12 weeks for delivery. My son will use the new baby's crib until his black one arrives. I only share this because my neighbor's have the same Newport crib set and are upset that they either have to take a net loss on the overall price or change to another color which will not match the decor in the room.
Although we are obviously not happy about a recall for possible lead paint, we are overall pleased with the customer serve of both USA Baby as well as Munire. I understand that this is a voluntary recall and, as such, find it extremely responsible of Munire to respond in this way.
I hope that this makes sense and am more than happy to share additional information, if needed.
I’m so glad other people are happy with the customer service re this recall. I am completely furious with the way we’re being treated. I bought the set in NC but have since moved to NJ. We ordered the replacement from Crib & Teen City in Springfield (the only retailer near us) and was told it would be delivered and the old set picked up on Friday for no charge. Yesterday they called to say they will not deliver unless I agree to pay $200 delivery charge – that’s over 10% of the original purchase price!!!! Munire said they had to “look in this” and would get back to me. Of course I still haven’t heard back from them. We no longer have my father in law with his large truck just down the road so picking it up ourselves isn’t an option anymore.

I feel bad for the family that was affected by the Munire’s lead crib resulting in lead poisoning of an infant/toddler. How could a company that claims their cribs are tested and that is an integral part of their manufacturing let this happen?
I will never by furniture from Munire. No thank you, I will take my business elsewhere.
