Best White: TruffleHunter White Truffle Oil

What’s the best truffle oil?

For this article, we tried out several top brands of truffle oil, both white and black. We were looking for the best taste, overall flavor profile and value.

Truffle oil is one of those confusing products, where many makers make various claims about how authentic their product is. There is little regulation as to whether it has to contain actual truffles—or just synthetic ingredients that mimic truffle aroma.

Bottom line: we recommended these oils based on our taste tests, not on whether they are using organic or synthetic ingredients.

For the best white truffle oil, we recommend TruffleHunter’s. Made in the UK, it has both “white truffles” and “white truffle flavors” that are suspended in olive oil (which is a common base). Here’s why we liked it:

What We Liked

• Mild, rich flavor with fragrant aroma. We tried this with risotto and were impressed with the results, compared to its competitors.

• No GMO’s.

• Vegan.

• Gluten-free.

• Nut-free.

• No MSG.

What Needs Work

• Pricey!

• Flavor is too artificial? We liked the flavor of this oil, but dissenters say it is too artificial.

Best Budget-Friendly

Organic, natural flavors
What makes this truffle oil different: sunflower oil! This neutral base lets more of the truffle essence come through, in our opinion. No artificial taste. Also unique: BPA-free tin container.

Best Budget-Friendly: La Tourangelle White Truffle Oil

Yes, truffle oil can be pricey—very pricey! In our taste tests of top brands, we are always on the lookout for a good choice that is also easy on the wallet. In the white truffle oil category, we thought La Tourangelle’s oil had an excellent flavor profile . . . but at a price per ounce that is more budget-friendly.

What We Liked

• Sunflower oil. Unlike other oils we sampled which are olive oil based, this one uses sunflower oil. Why is that good? Well, olive oil tends to lend its own flavor notes . . . sometimes this can clash with truffle flavors. Sunflower is more of a neutral base . . . and that lets more truffle flavor come through.

• No GMO’s.

• BPA free can.

• Organic sunflower oil.

• Expeller pressed.

What Needs Work

• Flavor is different than others. We didn’t think this was a negative, but if you prefer olive-oil based oil, this will taste different . . . and some folks may not cotton to that!

Best Black Truffle Oil

Stronger and more earthy
Excellent to pair with meat dishes, we liked this oil for its more earthy, rich flavor notes. Also great drizzled on popcorn. Caveat: artificial flavoring turns off some truffle enthusiasts.

Best Black: Toland Truffle Oil, Black

After sampling several black versions, we liked Toland’s the best. Yes, black truffle oil in general is more earthy than —the key, in our opinion, is to balance those notes with food pairings like filets (compound butter, for example). A tiny bit goes a long way!

Here’s why we thought Toland’s was better than others we tried:

What We Liked

Excellent as a finishing touch for roasted veggies, popcorn and more.

• Rich aroma without being overpowering.

• Gluten free.

• Made in Italy.

What Needs Work

• Artificial flavor. This upsets purists, understandably. Yes, oil does have a small amount of black truffles suspended in olive oil . . . but it also uses artificial truffle flavor to enhance the aroma. We liked it overall, but we know some folks may be disappointed.
